ball powder then a magnum primer is needed. If you are using the stick type powder then the standard primer will do. If you are shooting the 7 GNR in a TC pistol, then I would go with a large pistol or large pistol magnum. The cup of the pistol primers are a bit softer than the rifle and if your handgun has an action job where the hammer fall is lightened, then the pistol primers work better. In a rifle where the firing pin has a monster spring behind it the rifle primers will do fine.

When we first developed the 7 GNR we just used large rifle primers as it shows in our loading manual but had some people saying they were getting a few misfires using 748 powder so we told them to switch to magnum primers. They said no problems after that. So if you are using large rifle primers and get a misfire from time to time, switch to magnum primers and you should be fine especially with ball powders like 748, H-322 and a couple of others.
