Reeder Custom Guns - The .400 GNR sounds so intriguing to me

Basically the .30-30 family brass straightened all out. I think it's a great platform for a G2 Contender hammer for larger game with a 12" barrel or so. It would not have undue bolt thrust due to the smaller case head. Recoil should not be unmanageable either.

I have a fantasy to find a Pre-64 Win. 94 in beater truck gun shape for $350-400. Then I commission Gary to install a new 10mm barrel chambered to .400 GNR and fix up a good front sight to go with an aperture rear. I can refinish wood myself. With good bullets such as this 250 FNGC it would be great.

It's my understanding that Joel Leinard designed the bullet for a unique levergun project. Joel used to frequent the forum and I understand he has had some serious cardiovascular issues the last few years. A relatively young man, he's had it tough. But I digress... the bullet is a sound looking design and would be perfect for .400 GNR and I hope .401 GNR too.

The .401 Herters, .400 GNR, .414 Super Mag. (.410") and .357 Max. brass.

the wings just trying to work out all the details. The 400 GNR reminds me of a 10MM SuperMag.

but the old Win., Pre-64 really, feels good and livelier to me. The top ejection is so mechanical and involving that I enjoy it more. Crap sights unless you put a peep on it, forget scoping. However Marlin made a straight stocked 336, I believe it was the "Texan" with a straight stock I really, really, liked. In my view it was about perfect, best of all elements. Plus you could easily scope it if you wanted.

Gary's .355 GNR is hard to pass, sort of a thinking man's .35 Remington plus. It has more reach I bet and lots of .35 bullets. But the .400 is a pretty cool idea to me.

Looks slick as Owl droppings. Shoot 135 grain Nosler HP's for vermin, and the 250's for more serious matters.

They won't go all the way to the shell holder but plenty close enough (RCBS might). Neck re-size, flaring, seating and crimping are no problem.

Will it ever make it much ahead of the .401 or .41 GNR’s? Maybe with heavier bullets like that 250 gr it would do a little better. Out of a rifle you could certainly get full burn of proper powders. I suppose it would be neat to plunk in a long straight cartridge kinda like a mini nitro express lol

Certainly would make an interesting study in efficiency........ .401 vs .400 finding where the threshold of barrel length/velocity gains lies

I find I can get by with about 60 gr. of burn in a 12-14" handgun barrel. Some slow powders actually still give faster speeds. Adding bullet weight does improve efficiency some, within reason.

My .375 Win. FA2008 would only do about 2000 fps with the 15" and a 230 gr. JSP. That's what I took to AK. A cast bullet would do more, and the .400's straight sides holds notably more powder. I re-chambered the FA to .378 GNR and burn that 60 gr. to push a 260 gr. Nosler at 2300+, with a shortened 12"+2" brake, current barrel.

Not that it helps but you should be able to shoot .401 Herter's through the .400 GNR. LOL The only difference other than length is a little bit of rim diameter, 0.475" vs 0.495".
