In finality I always end up converting to carbines. Just so much more useful. The 10.5" is the original modification (Viet Nam era) of the M-16 and it's gas system. There is some decisive trickery involved in getting one short to run totally reliable. You can't just slap on a short barrel and go with it. I'm sure the piston systems are better adapted.
My 10.5" was easy to add a 5.5" flash hider to make it long. You seldom encounter the "Barrel Police" but why be stupid. I'm always surprised how ferocious the blast and flash is from a short .223.
