More DMV - in Uganda (from Carolyn)
We took our Land Cruiser to the Uganda Revenue Authority to have it registered. I innocently sent my driver who has a Uganda license to take it. They “arrested” our car. They refused to release it because he didn’t have an Iris ID card on him. So I drove to the place in another car and showed them my ID card and my passport and work permit, all the ID to show I owned the car and was the director of Iris Uganda. They said they had to see the driver’s ID who drove it in and not mine bec HE drove it in. I was just dumbstruck. He said I could pay the fine if I didn’t want to do that. I said fine, I will pay it. It was $5,000 USD!! So long story short we got someone at the base two hours away to take a picture of his ID from his house and email it to me so I could email it to the guy at the desk in front of me to get our car back. All of this took the entire day, literally. We didn’t get home till almost 8:00pm.
So now I hired and “agent” who is processing the paperwork for me at a phenomenal fee to get our new Uganda plates and get it registered here. It now sits at the URA for another week until all this is finished. Welcome to my world. Next time you have to sit at the DMV for three hours…
