Hey Gary

Do you have a way to post a video of you shooting your 450 GNR when you get the 500gr up to 2000fps? I would love to see how much the recoil is as well as how effective the muzzle break is. I have shot the Contender 45-70 with 500gr up to 1550fps and only did it a couple of times. Of course the muzzle breaks on those barrels were not as effective.

Mark

I used to have some shooting my .416 at 1900

but they were not very dramatic. It kicks straight back for the most part, me grimacing a bit, fanning my hand, maybe kissing my knuckle. (unless I lock both hand webs at the back of the grip I get knuckle bit or whacked somehow - I use Pachmayr grips so I can reach the trigger better) There is also almost no muzzle flash as about all the powder is burned in the barrel. I was using H322 but several of my buddies use IMR3031. I've used H4895 too but it's not as hot as 322. You have a tiger by the tail for a special purpose. I used to have Dr. Firman's elephant shot with the .416 GNR at 2000+ fps and about 20-25 yds. Puffy loaded the ammo for him using IMR3031 I think, I have his load data someplace. The old coot pulled it off slick.

We'll have to look and see. I'll admit I'm a sissy, I don't think I'm interested in pushing my .476 GNR 500 gr./2000 fps. I currently have a 7mm-08, .416, .440, and .476 GNR in the Encore handgun platforms, no .450 GNR.

These are .440 GNR[image]

Thanks all for the info!

Gary

Can my 45-70 Katahdin barrel be reamed out to the 450GNR?

Thanks
Mark

I don't have 450 GNR. I have 45-70 Contender and Encore, and 416 Taylor. 350 gr. at 1800fps in contender, 350 gr. to 2000 in Encore. Recoil is brutal in Contender. I have the Super 16 T/C barrel with sorry muzzle tamer. Sent it to Mag-Na- Port and had 4 slots before the muzzle break, a big help.
The 416 Taylor Encore does 2000fps with a 400gr. Recoil is much lighter with 350gr. at 2100fps.

Mark, I only have it to about 1850 so far

and may not get it to 2000. At 1850 the recoil is rough. Manageable but rough on both the shooter and the scope. Anyway, I shoot it a bit every afternoon, easing up a bit on my load each session. I know the gun will take it. Whether I can and whether the scope can is sort of iffy. It comes to a point of being too much in the field and not being able to get a quick second shot off when the gun is pointed straight up and has twisted almost out of my hand. But we shall see. We are a bit over 4 weeks now so time is getting short.

I have loaded 400gr to 2000 in my 450 GNR

And the recoil wasn’t too bad, but another 100gr of bullet might be too much fun! I’m surprised how effective Gary’s muzzle breaks are.
