I recovered the 125 gr. bullet that I fired from the little S&W. It penetrated 6 3/4 inch plywood boards.

garnering 1200 fps or so with 125 gr. bullets, much better than I'd expect. The .38 seems to be locked in the 700-900 fps bracket no matter what you shoot.
With all the ballistic BS out there I read that basic standard penetration goal is 12" of "ballistic gel", whatever that is. The .380 ball just manages that so I did not waste the money on JHP. For all the bad guys I've shot so far they have done well. The .38 is a do it all and I have no issues carrying it with soft lead or cast 158 gr. SWC. I do like the SWCHP from soft lead (Hornady and Speer used to make them in bulk, Albert's too), not that they fare any better, they just look cooler and make me feel "warm and fuzzy", more tactical.
I'm still blinded. . .
