The ammo was running around 1800 fps from my 7-1/2". I think I was using W296 powder. I could not load full listed loads in the manual in MY revolver but they were fine in the single shot. It shoots flat as a banjo string. Actually the cast bullets were a poor choice for sheep. The bullets shot straight through bone and all like hot butter. I saw the bullets hit the dirt way beyond the animal so hard I was certain I missed, but I didn't. They were laughing in the shed calling me "sheep hater" as they both had 10-12 holes in them, the in and out!

A better choice would have been the Hornady 100 gr. or 90 gr. XTP (I usually push .311 jacketed bullets through a .309 Lee sizer - works perfectly). These run around 2000 fps easy and offer some expansion. I was originally after hogs so I was using a 150 gr. .30-30 cast bullet that I modified the mould, shorting it from the bottom and using a lube groove for a check shank, lightening to 125 gr. with a more nose heavy profile. Loads usually end up somewhere around 20 grs. with most slow pistol powders. Faster powders like Unique actually give great performance in the 1500+ fps range.

Let me say I'd certainly opt for the full custom package giving you a custom .308 barrel with special throating, crown and faster twist than the factory Ruger .30 Carbine. Either cartridge the .300 GNR or .321 GNR would do fine, with a little edge to the .300, but a critter would never know, and neither would you unless you shot over a chrono.
