This is very old pagan symbolism. It is a "Bacchante", a priests or follower of the god Bacchus. Bacchus (Roman) is known to be the God of the grape, wine, lust, sex and revelry. (The Greek name is Dionysus.) The Bacchante is symbolic of both the ecstasy and the destructive power of the god she worships and it's major attribute, wine. Though she sometimes thought of in modern times to be simply a free spirit, the Bacchante has an evil side. Bacchantes are possessed beings, completely abandoned to their physical natures. They are capable of ripping to shreds not only any animal that crosses their path, but humans as well, in a sacrificial rite known as sparagmos. Sometimes, the rite is followed by omophagia, in which Bacchantes eat the victim's remains.

Maybe, just maybe, there is a reason that other folks passed this up.... it is a somewhat grotesque and unholy image of a demonic nature. We are warned to avoid such things.......
