Scott, I was going through Gary’s reloading manual today. Was trying to put something together that I might like. And I came across a picture of you on page 86 with your 510GNR. I already own a 510GNR. But my question to you is, you don’t wear that Horshoe around your neck all the time when you hunt do you. If you do, you better not trip and fall. If that ever hits you on the head, it might just take you out? If anything a few teeth. Also, is the horseshoe facing the right way for good luck? Some say up, and some say down. ( just a little morning humor). Back to the 510GNR. Gary covers everything in his manual to a tee. On Deer and Black Bear do you or Gary have any personal preferences with the 510GNR.

Those are special light ear protectors that cost about $20. They are amazing! Simply put they are foam ear buds with the spring holding it against your ear openings. The workings are basically a voluminous hollow tube that expands the capacity of the ear canal and insulates it. Your skull and skin insulates the inner and this plastic does for this extension tube. That's my extent of knowledge on the thing but it works fantastic, I highly recommend them. I can still hear normal conversation as well as I can anyway. Used to be only sissy's used ear protection... After a few Magnums it used to not hurt any worse.
My .510 was an early attempt to use the #5 gripframe with heavier calibers than .44 Magnum. The consensus was that it might not have been the best application, but boy it looks cool. A Bisley Gunfighter style is hard to beat at recoil mitigation. The #5 or #6 (5-shot version) if you will, is pretty slippery to hang onto with REAL recoil. The hammer has cut me a few times as it spun from my girlish grasp.
Gary has some pretty lively loads listed. I couldn't handle them too many in a row. I settled on a 27 gr./4227/410gr. loading with cleaner burning Magnum LP primers for that Bison. The same load with a 350 gr. is fine too. I can't really see a need to go 3-6 grs. more but you sure can if you are man enough. Headed to AK they requested if we wanted to use our revolvers for primary black bear weapon hunting to bring jacketed ammo. I bought some Barnes traditional JSP 300 gr. .510" for the .50-110 Winchester cartridge. My load runs 1400 fps but I could go to 1600 fps easily! That's in my 6" revolver too! That would be my pick for deer if I wanted to try it (1200-1400 fps). The bullets expand wonderfully. Blake had Hawk make him some .510 Jacketed bullets too. Normally I'd just use a 350 class flat nose gas check cast for about anything.
I have a custom 200 gr. mould and I'm working on a duplex (two shot payload) load. Bottom bullet is gas checked, top one is not. I've gone to 500 grs. too, just to see if I could do it. The latter was not stable in flight at the slower speed (about 800-900 fps) I felt reasonable for the prolonged recoil. You would have to really get stupid to spin it faster (probably 1200+ fps) to stabilize it. Not me! The bullets made a 1/2"x1" entrance hole in my catch drum, sideways.
