300 Weatherby - Ill end up eating crow on this one...
Normally I'm anti magnum on rifles. My only exception is a 350 Remington Magnum.
But, the Weatherby I bought from the estate sale is exquisite.
Very slim trim muzzle brake, Leupold Scope and the works makes a fine package.
Ill replace the aluminum scope rings and mounts with steel ones. I just cant warm up to aluminum on the big ones.
I"m afraid this one has a new home.
300 Weatherby
I bought mine in 1972 in PA.
In 1974 I take a job in Santa Barbara, CA. We worked on the LA County Fire Communications system so we rented a house in LA to be comfortable.
I spent my spare time going to gunshops in the area with the Weatherby Factory being one of them. You could buy a box of fired brass for $2 a box. The test range was in the basement and all the brass came from testing the rifles. I am sorry I didn't buy a box of all their calibers. I later bought a 240 barreled action.
I think the Weatherby's use a pressure point since I glass bedded both of mine. My 300 likes the Winchester 150 grain silver tip and gets 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. On whitetails, the 300 picks them up and they are dead before they hit the ground. It is too much on whitetails so I use the 243.
Sierra also sold bullets by the pound which were bullets they ran through the machine to lap the dies. Great times and lots of trap and skeet shooting at the LA Center.
Boy would have loved to see that.

I threw away the boxes
Here are the 240 Weatherby brass which was Norma at he time.

I took the 300 Weatherby brass out of the boxes and put them in MTM plastic boxes. Then I throw away the boxes. I have done some dumb things at times and not thinking about the future value like all the American Handgunner magazines from the first issue that I threw away when moving to another location.
The 300 Weatherby is more power then you need for under 100 yards shooting deer....too much noise. I have taken three doubles with the 243 on my property when shooting at 100 yards. They are use to the noise of the aircraft flying out of Dulles Airport and are not bothered by the 243 noise on the first shot and just look around.
I now consider deer to be a pest in the urban areas. You have to put up a deer fence to keep them out of your garden and then you have to worry about the ticks and Lyme disease. A healthy immune system is your only defense since the Lyme virus can detect the antibiotics and go dormant and form a protective shield. The bacterial pathogens that cause Lyme disease and syphilis are highly invasive and can bore into the organs of your body. Most doctors aren't educated on treating or recognizing Lyme disease so you are up the creek. Lucky I was taking the nutritional supplements they recommend for your body to kill the Lyme virus.
I figure .240 WBY is a good little round
I have a 6mm Ackley on the Remington adaptation of the .257 Roberts to .243 cal. It's very efficient and is not that far behind published Wby. ballistics which are usually from a 26" barrel, mine is 24".
I have been trying to stick with 100 gr. bullets to extend life on the throat just goofing around. The 85 gr. is so good though and fast too. For deer it is more than enough with good placement. The Ackley sounds the same as a .243 to me, just about 300-400 fps faster. Shoots a bit flatter I guess if you were really going long on small targets.
I can get my M98 to feed the 6mm Rem. slick (really it's a cousin to the 7/8X57 that the gun was designed for) but a little notchy with the straight sided and sharp shouldered Ackley. I guess it takes a really special knowledge and touch to do both. Been working on it 20 yrs. and still not finished. "The Blue Gun", lol.
