Anyone have information on this?
At the range I picked up an odd cartridge,.... 30-06 but weird looking.

It had that weird ring around it. I discovered it was a plated steel case ... Berdan primed. I ground the back open and the ring does not appear to be from excess case lengthing, but was made that way.

Just kinda wondering what the deal is with that ring on the case.

It is Russian made by this company
This one was Russian made by Barnaul Cartridge Plant.
The groove is stretching out from the gas pressure and is adding length to the case below the obturating upper part of the case. This is a small safety against case head separation.
Mic McPherson said same thing.
Interesting that on the website the 06 is the only cartridge shown to be made that way.
Apparently the 308 is made the same way
