a little splash(capful) of brass cleaners from Midway or some other shooting products companies. I have also put a small amount of Brasso in the mix. Run it a few minutes to even disperse it in the tumbler and put the in the brass. This mix is pretty clean on the brass and they shine up well. The Green & Red stuff you talk about is horrible and really gunks up your brass with a coating coating of whatever polishing compound they put in the mix. I through that stuff out.

bought some Hampster bedding that was corn cob and used it. The granules were too big and hard to get out of cases. Like Jim said about anything will work, rice too. Some of these boys are using shards of stainless steel even, sure to eventually ruin your plastic vibratory cleaner.
The commercial stuff is not cheap but lasts a very long time. They have selected it to be a better fit than some rigged up media.

usually tumble a lot of brass from our test firing sessions. Colleen ordered me one of the big monster tumblers that holds 12,486 rounds of brass. I use the green corn cob and the walnut mixed. One cleans and the other shines. It works for me.

When I was doing bulk batches of brass, I would buy a 50# bag of walnut media from the local sand blasting supplier for about $20 per bag. Add some white diamond polish available at your local auto parts store to the media and your shiny brass will be the envy of the neighborhood.
Plain white rice works well.

I’ve settled on untreated corn cob with a little of the cream type polish added in. I’ve used the green treated corn cob and it worked good too although after a while it seemed to gum up the extractor grooves (I probably should changed it out sooner).
I’ve found with my .41 GNR that the cases don’t even need to be tumbled. In fact, the chambers are so well cut that I could skip resizing cases.
