Reeder Custom Guns - Heard Dick Casull passed away today...

We agreed with what they did, I feel loosing them touches us all.

I remember reading a pretty rare article by Ross Seyfried where Casull was trying to get Seyfried onboard with his wheelgun antics. The real Ross was slightly exposed in his admitted dismissive inclinations. Casull was way, way, out there but showed him it could be done, without blowing yourself up. Ross published some very wild articles in the late 70's and 80's that sure got my juices flowing. Keith was an old man by the time I really came of age but I really enjoyed reading his stuff. Ross, Milek, Skeeter, etc. were the handgunning men of my youthful time. But it was really the Pioneers in the shadows that influenced the well connected writers that deserved true credit. Men like Dick Casull.

And all sorts of exciting stuff. Now, I can actually do these things.

But, we shouldn't forget the people who got us here.

The 454 stuff was as exciting then as the 25-20 is now. But, folks said it couldn't be done and heard the same about the 25-20.

would read one of Skeeter's articles but he wasn't one of my favorites. He was a shooter, not a hunter. My heros were handgun hunters like Goerg, Jurras, Milek, Warren Center, J.D.Jones and one or two others, guys that had been there and done what they wrote about. To me Ross Seyfried was too far out there in la la land. I read his earlier articles but as he went along he got more and more off the deep end. I talked to him at a custom show and in my humble opinion, he was pushing the limits in safe loading and shooting and sometimes past that point. Keith was famous for his exploits and cartridge design work but he didn't interest me as he wasn't a true handgun hunter. Dick Casull was a brilliant man with his cartridge designs and sometimes I think he didn't get the praise he deserved. I thought his 38 Casull was a great idea, but somewhere along the line it fizzled out. He didn't get half the press he should have. Hell, half the young people back then (and now also) called his cartridge the 454 Casual. And there wasn't a damn thing casual about the 454.
The only true handgun hunters we have to look up to these days are John Taffin and to a lesser extent Mark Hampton.

I have mentioned this before and I hate this, but the young handgun hunters these days have no heroes. There are no Goergs, no Mileks, no Jurras'. There are handgun hunters out there but none stand out like these men did. I think handgun hunting will continue to be strong but it doesn't have the excitement or fervor it had in years past.

order one but none of our distributors had heard of it. Then next thing I knew it had been dropped. I thought the little drop down trigger 22 was cute, like the old 100 year old "muff guns" the ladies carried in their muffs.I have one of the original Muff Guns in my collection of odd stuff at home. In the pic it is the top row, second from the left.

Those are interesting part of history.
I also would think that the muff gun would be rustier. Could they be carried all 4 weeks a month?

scratched "45-70 justice". On one of our shows down in Tucson, an old fellow came to the table and said he got it from his dad who was stationed at Fort Huachuca there on the Mexican border. He wanted to trade it for a set of grips.

He looks up to Gary Reeder and some other Misfits too.
