and how much it runs to ship a gun. Here are the reasons the shipping costs so much. There are 8 reasons and each of these raises the cost by several dollars. Plus these are over and above the standard rates to ship.
1. There is a rate hike now in effect
2. there is a higher fuel surcharge in effect.
3.If you live in a rural area (like Flagstaff) shipping is more costly
4. If the package is going to a house and not a business, it costs more
5. signature required costs more and by law all firearms are supposed to be signature required.
6. Insurance..this has gone up recently
7. they now go by dimensional weight. If you ship a long wide box that is lightweight, it will cost more than a short fat heavy box. And when we ship we have to list the dimensions.
8. all handguns are supposed to go overnight. That will sometimes triple the standard rate.

We shipped a rifle to one of the Misfits today and figuring these 8 things in, the shipping was almost $70. And that was ground shipping.

These things hold true with Fed Ex also.

Gary, I will try to call you this week. I think, if any of my rifles are done by then, I will just have you bring em to HHC. But, it may be a non issue. Thank you bud!

You good folk in the US are not alone in this regard; over here in Oz firearms, if going interstate, MUST go through a dealer (average fee is $50), even within each state is, I think, the same. Signatures on both ends of the shipment, and average delivery time can be up to a week. General mail is about the same. Size limits apply (max length under 4'2") West Australia Police have severely limited who can carry into or out of the state, and Australia Post is not one of them.
I recently sold a nice Sako into West Aust, the buyer had to use a specialist D/G Airfreight group, cost him over $300. They're definitely milking us, no matter where we are

I worked at UPS back in the late 90's sorting packages and IDing lost packages with missing address at the Dulles Hub.
The Zipcodes for some locations were wrong and not up to date plus security at this location was totally lacking.

You could walk in without an ID and not be challenged. The boss I worked for was dishonest as were several of the supervisors who were taking items that were involved in broken packages like magazines and keeping them.

I did a lot of extra work to improve the sorting and was never paid for my expenditures.

Some of the delivery personnel can have a don't care attitude and leave a package with plants out in the hot sun.

Recently, UPS left a package on top of the ashes in a bucket setting on the front porch. If the ashes had not been two days old, the package could have caught on fire.

While USPS rates are lower, their rates have gone up also but I prefer them over UPS and FED EX.

If your FFL charges you a $25 fee for managing a shipment like that and shipping is $20 the total is still way better than forced overnight?! A secure overnight letter is $25!

Different FFL's and waiting periods in varied states would complicate matters but it's something to consider if the customer is agreeable.

Depending on the circumstances that's not a bad option

Thats exactly why I prefer my LGS over big box stores..
