You good folk in the US are not alone in this regard; over here in Oz firearms, if going interstate, MUST go through a dealer (average fee is $50), even within each state is, I think, the same. Signatures on both ends of the shipment, and average delivery time can be up to a week. General mail is about the same. Size limits apply (max length under 4'2") West Australia Police have severely limited who can carry into or out of the state, and Australia Post is not one of them.
I recently sold a nice Sako into West Aust, the buyer had to use a specialist D/G Airfreight group, cost him over $300. They're definitely milking us, no matter where we are
