I hate to admit it but WB had a good idea below

with the list of his favorite GNR guns and cartridges and the critters he has taken with them. If you have a favorite cartridge and gun, post it and the animals you have taken with it here. It also helps me to know which cartridges and guns are the most popular. I will start with a good friend that is no longer with us, Jason Parr. Jason loved the Ruger #1 rifles. The first pic is his new Beast in 375 H&H.

He also had one in 416 Rigby..

He used several Encores thru the years, the 378 GNR and 338 GNR being his favorite African cartridges.

He used his 358 GNR Encore at the HHC

he also took the first animal with the 610 GNR rifle
[image]

he also had a custom 475 Linebaugh he called "OL Painless"..

he used the prototype of the 457 GNR on a hog at the HHC.

Now it is your turn...

Excellent pictures of Puff.

I remember Puff's .375 Ruger No.1

He took great delight in showing us the features. It had a full bull barrel that delighted him by both balancing the rig perfectly and soaking up a lot of the recoil. It was a perfect package, pointing like your mother-in-law's finger! He liked them all but this was special.

like a lot of us, Puff preferred to use 4 or 5 guns

for all his hunting. I think he had 3 handguns, maybe 4 and a couple of Ruger #1s. I never saw him use a Contender nor a bolt action rifle. He may have, I just don't remember him doing so.
Not that there is anything wrong with that. WB above mentioned he only used a handful of guns and I used mainly my 41 GNR on a G-2 for 80% of my hunting. The other percentage mixed between my revolvers in 410 GNR, 429 GNR and 510 GNR. My recent African hunt brought out a couple of calibers that were not among those. The 310 GNR was my long range thumper in an Encore, while another Encore in 450 GNR was my big boy. The 450 GNR was my main gun on my first safari in 1992 and on my most recent one, 26 years later.

Irv reminded me that he used an Encore carbine in 350 GNR

in Africa. A set up he got from Puffy so it means a lot to him. Irv did an exceptional job in Africa with it last year.

When I was first getting Roman into hunting

he was very recoil sensitive. (He'd die for me to say that now) I had almost ruined him as a 5 yr. old letting him shoot a 5 lb. .410 shotgun. To a 65 lb. kid that KICKS! He would shoot a .22 afterward but basically didn't trust me anymore. Just the way he was wired.

Recoil sensitive Roman today, shooting a Reeder Custom Encore in .500 Nitro Express!

We finally worked our way back up and when he was about 14-15 he began shooting things but still didn't like recoil at all. Irv and Gary helped me get Roman set up with a Reeder Custom tapered 7mm-08 Encore 14+2" braked barrel. While the muzzle flash and blast will run a heard of Haints into a pile of pigs, the recoil is nothing at all. I mean really, really, nothing if even in the .223 class. It must have something to do with the amount of gases in proportion to the bore. The 120 gr. bullets easily exceed 2500 fps with starting loads.

I mated the Encore frame to a Choate M4 Type AR pistol grip buttstock with 6-position LOP stops. The barrel will manage either pistol or Carbine forends. This rig will suit not only Roman, Tori, and Benjamin as they move up in ranks but would be perfect for anyone, even me! 7X57 Mauser power in a zero recoil package with a platform to accommodate all arm lengths. A perfect factor ammo chambered rig, the 7mm-08.

Roman progressed to a 7mm-08 handgun to take his first game animal at HHC. The gun was superbly accurate and strong but I never liked the loading/unloading procedure.

Last year he took HIS hunting handgun. A Reeder Custom G2 in .30 GNR with Burris 2-7X shooting 150 gr. bullets at 2400 fps. More than a match for this Black Hawaiian Ram. Likely the beginning of a collection.

Eric and I were talking when he was in Arkansas. We wanted to get together for an afternoon, it was a pretty good drive for him too. We never did make it happen and I DO regret that. Fortunately I did get to spend some time with him at that last HHC. You never know when this one may be your last.

I shot Puffs .375 -- it was pleasant
