Which is fine to at least 250 yds. It is sighted dead on at 200 and will shoot MOA or less! The Ziess scope goes to 10X too. You'd think that would do. However Doug pines for a little easier reach for SA. He wanted to be ready for longer shots in case an exceptional trophy presented itself. He was very impressed with a Custom .300 WM Remington 700 and borrowed it for some of his shots. The 16X scope really had an edge over his 10X at ranges to 300 yds.
My two hunting rifles are a .30-06 and the .416. After reflecting Doug's notes and concerns I feel the need for something in the middle and lean heavily toward the .338 cal. I've not been to Africa but I have had considerable money riding on a shot and do not like NOT having an advantage. The .300 Win Mag is a little too close to my very fine .30-06 and the .30 cal. while adequate does not have an extra edge if the animals are harder than normal to put down, like Zebra. I'd feel better with a harder hit.
I'm going to play this summer while preparing Doug (who just bought a BRNO .375) with my .416 and faster, flatter shooting 300 gr. bullets. I might even trade for a "middle rifle".
Were I actually going along I'd take my .378 GNR single shot handgun and a flat shooting rifle. The 06' would do since I'm used to it and it's so accurate. The .416 is Thor's hammer and getting some extra range from such a big gun would be fun. We are going to prepare for 300 yds. and see what happens.
