416 GNR forming. I’m annealing the brass now.

The only thing I have big enough to initial size the brass is 45-70. How far down the case should I reduce the neck- 1/2”? Then size with the 416 die from there?

I never felt the need to anneal the brass for the 416 GNR

Starting with the 50 AK brass I went down to 458 and then the 416. With the 348 brass I didn't anneal either. I just filled it up the shoulder with a pistol powder (AA#7, Blue Dot, Unique etc) tamped down the powder with 1/4 of the square of toilet tissue rolled up into a ball and shot it in the 416 GNR chamber. It always worked fine.

I had the .476 and .440 GNR dies so

It was easy for me. I did not try to mash it all at once, wonder if it would crumple? I'd be a little afraid annealing might make things worse. Typically I anneal when "necking up" not necking down. I want the brass softer and more stretchy. I have "telescoped" or collapsed the neck into itself once when I improperly annealed the shoulder area of a case.

But who knows do whatever you normally do. I've just never tried it.

I squeezed .30-30 to .25-35 in one pass. Takes some pressure but I wanted to see if it worked, it did. I also necked up a .25-35 to .30-30 just to see, it also worked with new brass.

Thanks gents. I annealed cause I thought

it would be easier to turn the corner based on a short neck. It worked! I did 5 pieces in a single slow pass bumping the arm/ram as I approached the shoulder.

I did adjust the expander ball to support the neck as it entered the neck forming area to avoid crumpled necks. I’ll readjust the expander ball for decapping once all brass is formed.

Sounds good to me!
