Seeing the Sights

I noted with interest the discussion of seeing the sights and using peep sights on a sixgun. Having started into my 70's, I can remember the time when I could see the sights very clearly, but that was a LONG time ago!

On a sixgun I do not care for peep sights. That is MY personal preference and I am not trying to talk anyone out of it. I have a number of reasons why I don't care for them and they mostly apply to me.

But the idea of seeing the sights clearly for older eyes is not a new issue. And there is another option.

Merit makes a "diopter" attachment (I think that's what it is called) for your glasses. You can vary the diameter of the opening to make your sights appear pretty durn sharp.

There is also a company making a stick-on type ..

I have made my own from aluminum cans. It just folds over the glasses. They work pretty well though it takes a bit of playing with to get the right size aperture.

If you want to see some fancy (and expensive) diopters, look at what some of the olympic shooters use.

I may try that I did work with my

Optician who ground my dominant eye lens in my glasses where the rx near the top of the lens focuses better on the pistol sights. We went outside and I took a shooting stance with my pistol and he held up varying strength lenses until I had a good focus the he added that grind to the top 1/4th of the lens. The target blurs a !ittle but all I have to do is look out the center of the lens for clear distance viewing. since I shoot with both eyes open the target is consistently clear with my left lens. I just have to tilt my head down slightly to see the sights. The lens looks a little like an upside down bifocal.

I have seen those.

They seem to work pretty well. I have had others tell me about doing that same thing and they liked them.

I had m optician make up two sets of spectacles, one set for looong distance, and t'other for front sight distance with a handgun.
Then someone stupid went hunting in Africa without either of them ...

Ha!

I have left things behind on many trips. It has become a way of life for me now.
