so in reality it becomes a single shot shotgun. Your best bet would be to stay with the "baby magnums", the magnum version of the 2¾" shells. Unless you are shooting at geese way the hell up there, the "baby magnums" will do fine. And it's easier on you and the gun.

Remington 870's so converted from 2-3/4" to 3" by licensed Gunsmiths. Typically they also modify the receivers to eject the "opened" 3" hulls. On anything else I'd defer to a seasoned professional and tend to be a bit pessimistic on any doubles myself.

Unless you have a specific hunting need. How many more #5's are there in that extra 1/2 oz. anyway? 870 Express Magnums are so cheap I know that is a more economical way to go, Mossberg 500's too.

Modern shotshells are really good these days as to pattern density. Don't you think. I didn't know how busy GNR was and just tried to join in.

Wingmaster. It was a graduation gift from my dad and I don't like shooting any more than needed. That's why I bought another pump gun.

It's a very strong gun, but might be an exception. Everyone has their preferences. I don't like Winchester 1200's with the alloy receiver and the rotary bolt head that locks directly into the barrel. (Someone may take great exception, just my opinion) I love the Mossberg 500 design but it too has an alloy receiver, the bolt locks into a steel extension off the barrel, steel to steel too. Remingtons bolt locks into the top of the steel receiver. Of all I like the solid construction best for that reason.

I personally own M500's, 870, and old M12. But the 870 is a good one. I cannot condone what you are asking about, even though I personally have done it. You would not want to do much if anything I do to begin with. LOL Gary sure is right, the hull gets hung up upon ejection unless the receiver is professionally opened up about 1/4" more long. For what it costs you could likely do a favorable trade for a factory magnum.

Many shotgun chambers (2-3/4") might chamber a 3" but it's dangerous to fire it in them. The chamber has no provision for the opening fingers of the plastic shell opening and it really spikes pressure. She might blow. Just FYI, just because it fits don't make it OK. But what you originally asked it a different kettle of fish.

In one of the Handloader Magazines, Jan-Feb 1975, Tom tested many combinations of shotgun loads and came to the conclusion that any load over 1 1/2 ounce in a 12 gauge was a waste due to deformed shot leaving the pattern when using a 30-inch circle for pattern analysis.

His findings were that the Federal Shot cup wad gave the best performance.

We tested some of his recommended loads at 90 yards. We had to put sights on the 870 to help center the pattern. We were using newspaper rolls which are 60 inches wide. You could get the rolls for 50 cents back in 1976. When the roll got near the end, the printer changed them out.

Also at the time they were selling Linotype, so in order to carry 1000 pounds, we had to use my boat since we didn't have a pickup. :)

normally no as the opening where the empty comes out is

will it damage the receiver ?

not really because the fired round will not exit the action
