I worked for months when I was 15, saving enough money to buy an old beat up 1911. It was a little over $40 if I remember correctly.

Dad (we owned a used car lot) $75 cash for a late 1950's Cadallic. The guy got in it, started up, and drove away... I bought my first real rifle scope in 1975, made $5 mowing a big yard. The 4x15mm Tasco cost me $2.99 at Western Auto. Mounted it to my 552 Speedmaster and became a sniper!

$62.50 a week, which was a bit over $1.50 an hour and my Dad couldn't understand why I was making so much money sitting on my ass playing records. I think the average pay back then for the average man was around $85 to $100 a week. Plus my first job in radio was in McCook Nebraska and the cost of living at the time was real low there. I was in hog heaven, making $250 a month, driving an almost new '56 Chevy and playing rock & roll. It couldn't get much better for an 18 year old Tennessee boy.
