I gave Doug my Buehler scope rings off my M98 sporter "Blue Gun" to go on his vintage M88 Winchester .308. I figured I'd have an easier time finding an alternative than he. Plus I can hawk my base on Ebay.
I find my M98 has the "stripper clip" hump still intact with one rear ring tapped hole. Basically an unaltered receiver other than (3) holes tapped. Typically a custom will have that portion ground down to something more like a M700 Remington rear ring profile (usually by hand) or to what was known as "FN 98" specifications. So you encounter M98 bases and FN 98 bases. Some FN's have (4) holes others only (3). Usually all M98 one piece bases have only (3).
I'm game for a picatinny or old one dovetail and pinch rear set up. Anyone have any experience? I needed taller rings anyway and the antique Buehler's are high unless I fall into a sweet deal off an old Weatherby or something.
