Reeder Custom Guns - .243 long range

With all the hype of the new 6.5 mm stuff I found this article really interesting on the .243 Winchester. With all of the myriad of choices available it is great to see some one who is successful I'm long range shooting using something as "plain vanilla" as the .243 and winning with it.

My wife had one and we used it for many years as our Meat Gun. If we wanted meat and were not interested in stalking close, we took it. Never had to hit anything twice. The trick is matching the bullet to the game you are shooting.

Loading the .243 can be odd sometimes with some combinations, not sure why. I prefer the 6mm Remington with a long neck on the 7X57 or .257 Roberts case. Nothing wrong with the .243 and it's world wide.

The little 85 gr. BTSP bullets are hard to beat for all round. I played with the 100 gr. Hornady RNSP and they are great for deer here in the south. I like the 105's but the 85's are great. Winchester and Nosler went in and make a 90 gr. I wanted to try, a black silvertip.

I have a .240 Raptor 13" that is great and the handgun efficient version. You can chamber a .243 in an Encore but it's loud and not as efficient, the Contender/G2 .240 Raptor is grand. In fact the little .240 Banshee is amazing with 70 gr. or less, and only a dozen grains of powder.

it works very well for that. It's a pretty versatile cartridge whereas it's great for varmints with the lighter bullets of 55-80gr and great for deer sized game with the proper 95-105gr bullets and all important shot placement.

Ran them 3100 + fps ... they would go nearly full length through a good size Arizona Mule Deer ... as I said I never had to shoot one twice.

28" barrel. Hybrid 100V has done some amazing things for me out to 800+ yards.

I use a Browning BLR and 100 grain Sierra SP. I work up an accurate load for each of my rifles and use the ballistic tables to determine the sighting in trajectory out to 600 yards and then write the bullet drop for each 50 yards and tape the information to the underside of the stock. The BLR shoots under one inch at 100 yards. I have had some big bucks run 100+ yards before dropping.
The 243 has low recoil, low noise and is accurate. I have killed doubles three times on my property at 100+ yards. The noise does not scare them and you can take another one. One year I killed nine and could have shot more but all I saw were bucks. Hunters for the Hungry did well that year. I haven't kept one in a long time.

With the building of house close by, your shots are now selective so I don't hunt deer there anymore. Last week there was a bear on the property and probably was responsibility for destroying four bluebird boxes.

About a year ago, someone I know who has quite the gun budget gave me a very attractive deal on a custom Nosler .243 bolt gun. I put a high end Leopold 3.5-10 and have hit consistently out to 600 yards with 100 gr Accubonds. I have yet to push it further, but I plan to. My prior .243 was a Ruger #1 which I had used to kill deer out to 200 yards. All I am saying is I like my guns to be simple and able to refuel at any mom and pop gun store in anywhere USA. I can do without a 6.5.....
