What can I do with my Dad's Marlin 36 A DL in 30/30? What do you think would the best cartridge be?

and will still do for most things. It is one of the easiest centerfire rifle cartridges to reload and there are a huge number of bullets available.

If one is set on changing it the Improved 30-30 is a simple upgrade and standard ammo can still be shot in it.

There are a number of wildcats based on the 30-30 and the Misfits and Gary have quote a bit of knowledge and experiance with them.

For me the old cartridge works just fine as it is ... especially with some of the new bullets and powders available. But that is me.

I load the factory 30-30 in my Ruger #1. A 150 grn Hornady SST or Nosler BT at 2550 fps within SAAMI pressure limits.

The 355 GNR is a powerhouse of a cartridge. I won't argue it better or lesser than the other 30-30 based wildcats. For me the advantage comes with the many bullets intended for the lever action 35 Remington.

Also, a variety of cast and the dozens of bullets for the 357 Magnum. It's hard to beat the versatility.

A friend once offered to sell me his dad's win 94 while hunting at his camp inherited from his dad. I took the gun and looked it over good, a nice gun from another time. He said his dad had killed a lot of Maine deer at this camp over the decades so he knew it was good. I handed it back to him and said walk over to my truck. When we had walked over I told him to notice how he was carrying it, right hand gripped around the receiver for balance. Then I showed him that the bluing was worn away under his hand. He had a puzzled look. Then I said that wear imprint was his dad's hand where he had carried it through many miles of north woods. With a tear in his eye he put it away and said he would keep it now. He was early 70's then, I have often wondered what happened to that gun.

two of our most popular cartridges. These days we have 5 or 6 new cartridges based on th 30-30, so it is all up to what you want to do with it. We have the 221 Falcon for long range varmints, up to the 400 GNR for elk. And lots in between.
