An oldie, but not so goodie.
Not sure what period, maybe post war I know the Cowboy craze was rabid. Europe also took notice and the Belgians made many "Colt" type clones. Any help on the time period for this old Piece?
My step-dad Craig came up with it proudly proclaiming it a .38 Special. I told him likely it was SPECIAL but not a .38 Special, the frame was to small, almost single-six size. I figured maybe a .38 S&W but no, it's .38 Colt. The much smaller diameter case with a heel type bullet and very low pressure. It may be very much pre-war?! It is DA/SA with a hammer fixed firing pin and the lock work and frame style is very common to the old Colt Lightning not the SAA so much. I figure it is a poor curio and would not shoot it myself. Grips look to be off a 1950's .22 SA clone, or toy pistol.

I once had a S&W top break from 1890's in college
I loaded some .38 S&W using pyrodex and a cast 9mm .356 bullet. It locked up aligned well, in SA mode, so I thought I'd be OK. Taped a paper plate to a piece of 1/2" plywood and backed off about 15'. Instantaneously following the plume of fire and boom I got a serious thump in the chest that knocked me back a step or two! I'd shot my fool self! (I'd only done that once before with a C&B pistol))
Re-gaining my composure I saw I had hit the target and the wood rebounded the 9mm slug sideways right into my chest. It left a little red mark that was a bruise the next day. It really was an eye opener. My soul mate "Denning", got all fancy and centered his-self in the forehead with a chilled marshmellow using 3000 psi in a much more dramatic fashion and test of fate. But that is his tale to tell...
Any reloader who has not had one come back and hit him
hasn't tried hard enough.
I loaded up some light 45 Colts ... the old roundnose 255 gr. Lyman bullet and a real light charge of 700X. I stepped out on the porch in my bare feet and fired one into the wood pile where I had some juniper logs for the fireplace. I hit one in the end-grain, the bullet turned, came back and whacked me right on the end of the big toe. Gave me a nice large blood blister.
The next time I tried something like that I put shoes on first.
