Reeder Custom Guns - GPS vs Odometer

Took a load of to school stuff to our son's fraternity house yesterday for the start of another school year. When we got home I reset my GPS and noticed there was a difference in mileage recorded between the GPS and Odometer. The difference was about 6 miles, Would I be correct in assuming the mileage on the GPS would be the correct of the two? The GPS was on the entire time so all mileage was recorded. I've noticed this before but just never thought to ask, the longer the drive, the wider the disparity in mileage.

Whereas the odometer covers every mile you actually drove, side streets, corners etc.

Some GPS units can be set to track actual driving miles but otherwise give direct distance from point to point or "as the crow flies"

Once using GPS search on a road trip we waned to eat at a "Cracker Barrel" (no puns please) and did a search. It located one close by and away we went. Oddly it finally brought us to a very nice two story home in an upscale residential area. To my sudden realization obviously the "home" and mailing address of the local franchise owners.

A huge limiting factor with technology is it does exactly what you ask of it.

Another fiasco was selecting a trip direction navigation guide as "shortest distance" over "quickest". We did find "Cow Killer Creek" along the way which was a unique if demanding drive. Ditto the "shortest distance" horrifying trip through the getto in Memphis perfectly guided by GPS.

So consider what instructions you are asking the technology to do!

I would imagine the GPS is as the crow flies, straight line.
