Reeder Custom Guns - you guys have been somewhat patient, so here it is

we started on this back in the real early spring. It is now finished and ready to show. It is our new MASTER HUNTER. It is chambered in the 500 S&W. It is built on the customer's Marlin 1895 45-70 base gun. The gun is very accurate and in over 3 full boxes of different type and brand ammo it has functioned flawlessly with never a hitch. It should be the perfect gun for dangerous game. The gun was built pretty much from the ground up with many of the internals our own. It has a beefy barrel and is beefed up internally. The stock is finished in a soft satin hunting finish and the barrel is satin finished also with the frame being high polished with dangerous game scenes. It has an XS rear sight and a low ramp front with your choice of red, white, or gold bead. The loop has been widened for use with gloved hands. It has a Decelerator pad for smoother shooting. Unlike other companies with custom lever guns ours is inclusive of everything I mentioned here. No extra charge for any of these features. The gun is built on the customer's 1895 Marlin and as an introductory price it is $1795 on your Marlin.

500 S&W compare to the .45-70 ballistics wise?

The 500 S&W is a close range thumper whereas the 45-70 is capable of longer ranges.
The 500 S&W, out of an 8" revolver barrel will push a 350- grain bullet at 2000. The 400 grain at about 1800. The 500 grain at around 1500 fps. Out of a rifle with no barrel cylinder gap plus a 20" barrel you can add around 500 fps or a bit more to those figures.

A 45-70 in a Marlin lever gun will run a 300 grain bullet at 2200.
A 350 grain at almost 2000.
a 400 grain at 1800 fps.
Going by those figures the 500 will edge the 45-70 by a little bit.
These figures are for a 45-70 Marlin and out of a reloading manual. Your figures might run a bit more or a bit less.

I thought Doug was nuts. But it actually was really nice! Tons of loading components from light and speedy to super heavy. Factory Buffalo Bore was shockingly light (light jacketed bullet under 1400 fps) and we had a hefty 400 something cast at around 1900 fps. They were factory loads. Tons of ammo, bullet selections.

for Africa. I wouldn't choose it for cape Buff, Rhino or Elephant but for everything else in Africa it would be a great choice. And as quick is not quicker than a bolt action.

Could you cut a dovetail slot in the barrel, like the 1895 rear sight, to mount one of these?

With good scope selection it is an interesting option. An EER pistol scope will work fine (that's what I had on one of mine Leupold M8-4X) but there are specialty EER "Scout" scopes too. My Steyr Scout .376 Cooper had the Leupold 2.5X Scout Specific scope.
