they were a failed project of the cavalry at FT. Huachuca many years ago. They thought they could chase the Indians better with camels than with horses. That project flopped and I was told they just turned them loose. I hear from time to time that a wild camel has been seen down there.

45 minutes from here and is nowhere near the desert. I had heard they were released from Ft. Huachuca but who knows. I have talked to a couple of older game and fish guys who have seen one of two back in the mid to late 80s but they were much further south. One of these men told me of a lady who had a cow elk tag about a hundred miles south of here a bit NW of Phoenix brought a "cow elk" she had shot into a butcher to have it cut up and they were amazed that it was a young camel. So who knows.
I read that as well, thinking it was

the Camp Verde down by Sodona, turns out there was a camp Verde Texas that they are talking about, went on to say that all of the camels were sold within 10 yrs of the army experiment, which could have scattered them everywhere.
one of the game and fish dept guys told me he had seen one

several years back in the Bloody Basin area, which is high desert several miles west of I-17 and down around 3000 feet elevation. And the Camp Verde I was thinking of was the one 45 miles south of here. I didn't know there was one in Texas.
Nice Jon.
