Reeder Custom Guns - .44 Magnum

I know there has been lots of discussion about this on here, and on every gun forum that has ever been on the internet.
So, here goes, is my .44 magnum enough gun for anything in the lower 48 states, even up to grizzly bear, not that I'll ever encounter a grizzly. The .44 being properly loaded of course. Reason I am asking is that I also have a .454 Casull, but really I am not sure its a gun I really need. It's cool to have and fun to shoot (for a short while), but is it needed? I am not quite to the point of selling it yet, but the thought has entered my mind more than once.
I bought the .454 with the thought of getting to Alaska at some point in my life, the gun was at a gun shop, brand new, I saw it, wanted it and walked out with it.
I would mainly carry the .44, hiking, camping, woods bumming and backcountry fly fishing. I live in KS but a lot of my activities are enjoyed in Colorado.

I don't feel you have to need a gun to justify owning a gun. We all get one shot at this thing called life and I recommend putting God first and enjoying what he gives up. Just my opinion...

I like my .454, if I keep it I may put a scope on it as it has integral mounts, it's a Ruger Toklat. Always wanted to try a scoped handgun.. The gun is just not something I "need", I'm trying to be a bit more practical as I get a bit older (and smarter). But, as I mentioned earlier it costs me ZERO to keep, I have a chest holster and my only expense would be the scope.

that bought a 454 the same time I bought mine, his has never had a 454 fired thru it, nothing but 45 colt loads. Try that and you will have two guns to pack and enjoy, you can always move up to the 454 loadings.

I've only fired .454 through mine Hornady 240 gr XTP. I have some 325 gr hard cast "bear loads" to run through it
next time i have it out.

out longer than a 45 cylinder, works perfect in the FA 454, personally I like 300g XTP at about 1700. Thats what makes us all unique. Actually in the 454 the 240 g is about the slowest bullet you can shoot. Using FA data the 260 is the fastest at 2000 fps, this is thru a FA model 83. I would not try it in anything else, matter of fact it is quite unpleasant in the FA gun as well. hahaha enjoy brother

Marlin 44 mag rifle and a Ruger .44 carbine. I would not take anything for them. Out to 100 yards it will take anything on the North American Continent if you place the bullet properly. I use Garrett .44 mag Hammerheads in 330 grain (IN THE RUGER REDHAWK AND SUPERREDHAWK ONLY) and 310 grain loads for anywhere I think that there is something like a Griz around. They will take Elk, Moose, Cougar and Wolf as well as Black Bear. The only thing better for really dangerous game is a ,510 GNR in a SuperBlackHawk conversion (naturally I like that one as that is what I have...LOL) which I carried in Alaska. Either way you are not under gunned and you don't have to put up with the high pressure spike of the .454 Cassull and the twisting recoil. Just an old mans observation of what I can handle at the ripe age of 74,

If you do, bring more than one pistol. As Gary says "be ready for anything". I carry 2 pistols just for rabbits in New Mexico. You never know what might happen...out of ammo, lost cylinder retainer pin, squib load, bullet jumps crimp. My $.02
