but for Grizzly, leave the 454 at home and bring a 475 at minimum. Look at the ballistics. The 454 in a standard loading has almost the exact punch as a 30-30 rifle. I wouldn't go out looking for a Grizzly with a 30-30.

I have danced with 3 bears thru the years and in every instance had things turned out differently the bear would have been writing this instead of me. One of the calibers was the 510 GNR at max velocity and with a heavy bullet. He was shot at arm's length and hit twice and he ran off into the Alaskan bush and I had to go in after him. The 510 GNR revolver was covered in blood from the 2 shots at about 2 feet. The bloody 510 GNR is shown here..

Another I shot with him sitting on my chest with a hot loaded 44 mag and it took all 6 plus one round from my guide holding my 41 GNR#2 TC that was pressed against his throat. The biting end of the bear was on the guide.

The third fell from high up in a tree after Colleen hit him with the 338 GNR. As I turned to congratulate her the bear got up in my face and it took 6 hot loaded 41 GNRs center chest at 2 feet to put him down.

So if you plan on a Grizzly, don't take anything less than a 475 Linebaugh.

Has an informative and interesting article about bullet weight, velocity and penetration. It is a comparison of 45 Colt and 44 magnum. I've never tried their Hammerhead bullets, but what he says about bullet weight and penetration from his experience is something to think about.
