Cogitating on something ...

Today I was out and about hunting squirrels in the AM. I had sat in the woods and did have some opportunities but nothing in the way of taking good shots.

I did have one shot but it was a miss. I was using my TC Contender with a Super 16 stainless 22 lr barrel. This barrel is no longer made. It is a tapered barrel that can be used as a carbine or specialty pistol.

I had a thought as I was hunting for the bushy tailed creatures that the barrel was a tad long for what I was doing. It is fine off a rest or bench but if I had a shorter barrel or had this one cut down it would be handier for a lack of a better term.

So my thought was to possibly sell it and use the funds to but a 10 or 12 inch barrel.

Another thought, have this barrel cut and crowned to 12 inches. It would be what you can call high speed low drag outfit.

Not sure what I may end up doing.

That’s what I did

I cut my barrel to 10” and recut the crown. Accuracy improved and it’s easier to carry.

If you

cut it to 12 or 13, it being tapered it will handle very well.

There are usually a bunch of 10" 22lr barrels on Ebay.

I would keep the 16" for carbine use and get another barrel. I would love to find a 16" for that purpose. I bought a used 22lr and it has turned out to be the perfect squirrel taker.

In all honest I can count on one hand the times

I used it as a carbine. I am more or less a pure handgun hunter where I am allowed to do such a thing.

Where I live deer aren't legal handgun game but black bear, varmints and small game are thus if I do go out for squirrels it will be in the form of a handgun.

That barrel could be reamed out to any .22 Center fire too.

including Gary's new .22 on the blown out .30-30! Barnburner!

If you want a 10" .22 they are cheap. I have a 14" .17 HMR that is unwieldy as the .17 is such a teeny hole in a bull barrel, it's heavy. I wish it was cut back to a 10". They never made those though. I don't think.
