What is the finish on the older target grey SRHawks?

I have a friend with one in 480R and he is wanting to trade with me. Just wondering how durable it is. Strange they don’t use it anymore.

I was told they kinda "pickled" the metal

chemically. But some of the Rugerphiles on here will know for sure.

every once in a while a stainless part will go in the bluing

tank. When it comes out it has that same finish. Whether that is exactly how Ruger does it, I have no idea but stainless guns when blued turn that shitty grey.

Gee,Gary what do you really think about that finish?

Gary said when Ruger put that particular steel in the bluing tank, that unique color resulted, and they went with that for awhile. (could be wrong).
