I learn a lot that way.

I went hunting with a P.E. once, a little younger than me, nice fellow. It was a sponsored live quail hunt where they released pen raised birds into a open meadow before lunch. We had good dogs too. (25) birds each two man team.

The first bird at 15 yds. on the ground, BAM! The young Engineer blasted the tiny quail, nothing left but feet and feathers! The dogs even looked back to say "SOB did you see that?!" Our guest did a very grand job informing swiftly the theme of the sport, in a very gentle manner and professionally, which was to shoot the bird on the fly after the dogs made point. Next we were all at the dog pen getting an education on bird dogs, it was very interesting. The dog handler kept talking about "Gips". To my great relief the Engineer asked "what is a gip?", I wanted to know too but feared looking foolish. Had I remained silent I would have left in that state. Lesson learned. lol

BTW - we got 24 of the 25 birds on our team. One left to tell the tale. A "Gyp" is a young Bitch that has not yet had pups. Sort of relates the same as a Heifer does to cows.
