Reeder Custom Guns - Begin with a solid foundation...

I bought a bargain .450 GNR barrel for Roman at HHC and a used Burris 1.5-4X scope. I found another bargain new old stock Burris DDT-ETC "Handgun" scope base. Usually I prefer the "rifle" Encore base that is longer and positions the scope farther forward. I also like the broad spacing of rings to spread out the torque load to the scope. But this shorter handgun scope base matches more conventional short body scopes better, about an inch or so farther back on the rear ring. Next I'll add the Double Dove Tail rings and push the scope forward until the turret touches the front ring, acting like a recoil stop if it ever slipped in the rings. (Gary has told us this many times)

I may pick up this barrel in 10 years (I pray) for something important and I don't want to worry about it failing even then.

Next we will begin fire forming with .348 Win. blanks, a favorite method for me to make brass to match my chambers exactly to my specification.

Lots of good .458" bullets. I think I have a 340 gr. mould somewhere, and a 500 (!!). Also I have a stash of Remington JSP 405 gr. double crimp groove bullets straight from the factory at Lonoke.

Not sure what we'll use it on, but we will be ready!

A good hard cast 340gr. .459 bullet is Hunters Supply. It comes with a rebated heal and no gas check. Add gas check and have a great bullet. I used it in my 457 GNR to kill Elk. Both bullets went all the way through.

I have the 500 gr. FNGC (I used in .458's) and that 340 gr. FP plain base. I can do tricks to shoot that 340 plain base out as fast as I want. I can paint it, add a special plain base gas check, etc.

There are so many jacketed bullets for serious stuff. Roman ended up with some 350 gr. HAWK JHP too. It's a BIG ctg. that is surprisingly versatile.

and even the .476 GNR a little. I figure that will be a good starting point as the larger caliber should give lower pressures given the same bullet weight and velocity, that's a BIG generalization, but with some conservative application it seems to work.

For hot loads I have used H332, Puffy liked IMR 3031, and I think Sean uses it some too in the .416 class GNR. I'll certainly try the 4198. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a pound if I can find any around here.

Really hefty bullets with Trail Boss are so much fun and not a cork gun. 500 gr. slugs at 1100 fps are hard to stop, don't sack bolt springs, or aggravate carpel tunnel issues. The 400 gr. at 1800-2000 fps start to get real serious. I can only manage maybe a dozen in a day. Good to back up that session with a .327 or .255 Banshee etc. to calm the nerves.

My 340's are the LEE I make myself.

450 GNR

I have worked with the .416 and .440 GNR

IMR 4198 is a really good powder for the 450GNR and 476 GNR

I like 4198 in the 475 GNR too.
