Been hunting on horse back since I was a teenager also hunted the wilderness area every year for about 30 years started packing a 7 1/2 inch Ruger 44 mag, since then have a switch to a 41 mag with a 4 3/4 inch barrel, my advice always pack a Ruger with the transfer bar and always tie the hammer spur down with a leather tie holds your gun in and keeps The lead rope from cocking your pistol I've always packed a rifle on the right-hand side and usually pack a rifle with the scope so get you a scabbart that has a flap and a snap to hold your gun in it protects your scope and it's easy to pull out as you're getting off your horse at the same time this solved the pistol cocking problem and losing your rifle problem for me I've hunted a lotta of years that way never had a problem again
