Reeder Custom Guns - Following Jim's post, I've been working with my 44-40s...

This morning I had out my Colt New Frontier 44. I'd posted about adding a 44-40 cylinder to my exiting 44 Special. It was a breeze, so today was bench testing.

I easily reached 1200 fps with the 220 grain GT Hollow Point. Bullets mushroom to nearly nickel size down to under 900 fps. So, for me this is a valid hunting gun. Groups averaged just about 1.1". Much better than my best with the 44 Special cylinder. Maybe this is due to the .431" throats of the 44-40 vs. .434" for the 44 Special. Then again, maybe not. An added bonus is both cylinders shoot to the same POI.

Bought it when I was 14 or so ... was basically what I learned reloading on. Cast many a bullet on the kitchen cook stove.

The Colt pictured above and a Uberti Flattop Target model. Both have .429" barrels and throats that are over .429".

Accuracy has been stellar with both. Not sure if I will try jacketed bullets, maybe...

the only one. Darn accurate too..and about zero spitting from the cylinder gap, barely even noticeable and nothing to worry over. A real beauty, as all of Gary's builds are.

But, got lucky on this one. In buying grips for it, I learned it apparently has a second generation gripframe even though the gun is a generation three.

Just going by the required grips, but no matter either way.
