Reeder Custom Guns - Favorite method of hunting barring a treestand

Hello All:

For a long time I have been a huge advocate of treestands. I have several and as a rule all set up in supposedly strategic positions to maximize the chances of getting a deer.

Well that may be changing. Last Easter weekend I am not sure if you all know, I was hospitalized with severe vertigo. I spent Easter weekend in a hospital and then a week at home recovering. The whole world was spinning out of control and until they pumped me full of drugs and antibiotics it did not get better.

I hate to say it but I do not believe I fully recovered as it acts up from time to time.

This past Sunday I went out with the crossbow in Connecticut and then attempted to hunt from one treestand. I know the treestand is an oddball. It is in a somewhat crooked tree and leans a bit.

When I got up the stick ladder I did not feel right. In fact the past weekend I got a touch of a relapse where I have felt off balance. This happened a month or so ago and I had to sit on the ground.

So. What method of hunting has been the most successful outside of a treestand? Thanks.

hunt from a ground blind. I position it with my back to the rising sun and position myself back deep into the heavy brush, with plenty of room to move my hands. I like to take a sturdy stick with a Y at the top and stick it into the ground in front of me. That acts as my shooting stick. That has worked for me all over except up on the Arctic Circle for Caribou. There are no trees or big bushes there so i try to place myself in a group of boulders if possible, that way I can move and shoot off the top of any of them.

I can not ya my climbing stands anymore. So like Gary I try on ground camo. Not as effective, but I am sill getting out in the woods. Pete

is more effective that a treestand. Many of the "hunting" shows are sponsored by the treestand companies so they make a big to do about them. I can't think of a time I didn't score with a good ground blind. I have had whitetail deer walking along eating acorns walk up to within 5 feet of me in the brush and never see me.

I am no longer comfortable climbing trees and have been a ground hunter for years. I do not have and have never hunted from a tent type blind. Nor do I use stands. I make my own ground blinds from what’s around me in the woods. A pair of the long handle pruners a small bag or zip ties and a roll of duck tape and I’m good!

I actually had 5 deer within now range yesterday. I was carrying a 44 magnum however and took an old doe at 15 yards from just such a blind. I make a bunch and sometimes hunt from on to the next as the day goes on depending on situations. Wind change, sunlight now in my face, boredom.

Just make them simple and they will blend in.

On the edge of cover as much as possible. How fast I move is regulated by how dry/loud the forest floor is. Have Great luck on logging roads and trails to. Find a good spot and sit for minutes to hours. Then move again. Great way to spend the day in the woods. Easy way to see how the rut is progressing, and what is going on. you spook a little more deer that way at first. Over the years I find I also get more chances that I would not have. Never cared for tree stands.

have many trees so setting a good ambush or spot and stalk are your options. Of the two, I enjoy spot and stalk the most.

This little guy came in on my son and I this year and should have been an easy shot at 65 or 70 yards with the 455 GNR. But in Wa. they must be 3 point or better on one side, he was a little 1x2.

Hope the vertigo gets better.
