41 GNR #2

Looking for reduced loads for the 41 GNR #2 to shoot a 210gr XTP bullet around 1700-1800fps to duplicate the power of the 41 Magnum in a rifle. The whitetails around here are small in the 70lb to 150lb range at close range and I fell that a 210gr bullet at 2200fps is way more than needed for maximum 100 yards shots on these smaller whitetails.
Thanks in advance.
Patrick

Just switch powders, 4227 is a good one

that drops max power by about 100 fps at the beginning. It's also more adaptable to reduced loading than H110/296 etc. I still like magnum primers as the granules can sometimes leave residue with cooler caps. My 4227 loads in anything are always very accurate and I know neither heat nor cold will adversely affect my loads performance.

You can use .41 Magnum max loads as a god beginning, due to the larger capacity. The .41 GNR is about the same internal capacity as the .410 GNR, just in a longer format.

Thanks for the info. I was going to try 4227 but wanted to confirm it beforehand. I didn't need the African game loads but still have it to use if shots get to be more extended.

I go about things a bit differently but it works

just go slow and stay safe, never begin with listed max loads. Just because it's written in a manual (or heavens the internet) does not make it so. I like to shoot over a chronograph to let me know something is not right, like wild velocity variations or something way out of my expectations. Then the normal brass tells; sticky extraction, primer extrusion or cratering, the edge of the pin indentation (rolled or sharp?). Some dispute the indications as to pressure but it has worked for decades. If it sticks you are probably too hot, it's sure not gonna do, nor is right. Back off a grain. Case set-back (in revolvers) is more rare but can be caused by either too low pressure or too high, sometimes it's the pressure curve of the powder. The brass must grab the chamber wall until pressures subside, then hopefully let go for extraction. Even old worn out brass can cause issues, lost it's flex.

Some guys are shooting the .414 Supermag in revolvers and using the 4227/210 gr. JHP combination. The .414 is the same length as the .445 brass but .41 Mag. in diameter, so its smaller capacity. They are listing loads they use in the 26.5-27.5 gr. range with .4227 and a 210 jacketed bullet. You'd figure the larger capacity .41#2 (on the .445 SM case) would show less pressure given the other equal factors. That would be a worthy test to explore. I see most of Gary's H110/W296 loads for the .41#2 show the useful capacity closer to 30 gr. Use your normal loading safety procedures, do smaller batches until you find your load. That's the fun part.

Accuracy is paramount of course, you can't hit it's no good. But I have faith that the combination with 4227 can be found to produce great consistent accuracy. You are looking for reliability, the desired power level, and accuracy, all at the same time.

A neat bullet that one may try...

The 300 gr. pointed projectile for the .405 Winchester is a diameter of .411", a simple matter to mash it through a LEE sizer to knock 0.001" off the size. That makes it a perfect hefty and thick jacket slug for super deep penetration in .41 single shot platforms. I have even done some very drastic re-shaping by taking it all the way down to .401". It's best to chuck the sizer in a vice to tap the lubed bullets through with a mallet, too much stress for a press. I'd not care to go farther than that.

A more rational application is to re-size them for use in the .401 WSL at 0.408". Easy to do. I can make the WSL cases from several things, including the .414 SM far left.

They made a “flat point” 300 grain also

Not sure if they still do. It was Hornady, i believe, that made them.

You can use 4198 also. Very accurate and will drop

200 FPS.

4198 sounds interesting

Did you use with the Horn 210gr XTP bullet and what was a god starting charge?

I use the Speer 210 deepcurl. The xtp will be fine

Let me dig up the data. Shoot me a email and I will get it to you tomorrow. naugle955 at gmail dot com
I worked up the loads for my son Jon, As reduce loads in his encore pistol when he was younger
I shoot a lot of 4198. Use it in 25 raptor,
361 falcon, 476GNR to name a few. It's never the fastest powder but always accurate
