I finally got a little meat in the freezer...

I got out to hunt yesterday around 2pm. We were hunting a stretch of gas line that runs into a creek bottom. My brother in law was about 600 yards behind me. About and hour before dark he starts texting me that deer are crossing about 200 yards behind me. I can't see this as that's the other side of a hill. He says they'll likely cross the hill and head back toward the creek so I should be ready. Just after that I see to does walk out and start eating about 75 yds in fromt of me. So,.. I wait. About 15 minutes before official sundown I hear "Ba-BOOOOM!!" from behind me. Then the text came through. Those deer he'd seen moved in the other direction. He shot nice 8 pt that was about 180 lbs. Which is a big darned deer for South Carolina.

So, those does I'd seen were still in my sight. I decided that if they were still there at the last legal light (30 minutes after official sundown) I'd take the one farthest away. If I can't make it about deer, I'll make it about the shot. I'm pretty confident in daylight with the G2, but that Burris 2-7 ain't made for low light situations. I see those two does mosey down to the bottom of the hill in front of me. Nothing but shadows. The sun is still shining a little light into the scope. But, they're heading up hill so I still have a chance when they hit the crest. I keep the gun up and ready and keep peeping through the scope until I see their silhouettes. They're both around the same size so which ever goes broadside gets it. But they don't immediately turn. I make a really really poor fawn call to get their attention and one turns to look. I put the crosshairs over what should be the lungs and then I see the deer turn as I ease into the trigger. It hits the deck for a second and then pops up and take off running. DANG!. So I wait hoping it had stopped to lay down in the edge of the lane in some cover. I let 30 minutes go by then I make the walk down. I find the deer about 10 yards inside the tree line. My lung shot turned into a hit a few inches behind the heart. The 7mm GNR was perfect. Those 120 Sierras do every time. The deer may have lept twice before giving it up. While it ain't a trophy by any means, It was a great shot by my personal ability. Just under 200 yard. On the hoof I guess the deer was 70-75 lbs. I might be generous on that number. But,.. it'll be good eating. And my first deer of the season.
