And you would have to hold your nose to skin them. Those Conibear traps are dead right there. How much do coon hides bring now? Trapping is a dying hobby but sure was fun. Good for you.

The larger ones for beaver are a danger to set even with the setting tool.

It was a good life trapping in high school and the money was a lot better than what you get today.

I use to get some of my supplies from O.L. Butcher. His place is still standing. Someone posted pictures of the buildings on the NY trapping forum.

He also wrote articles about trapping different animals which were published in pamphlet forum.

I mainly trapped muskrat and an occasional beaver. A few mink were around and one of my friends caught one in a non drowning set.

I did have a weasel jump into the boat one time and I was lucky to knock him out with the paddle. We didn't have Conibear traps back then.

Raccoons are plentiful now due to no or little trapping. In the late 70's when I was living in an apartment, two construction workers were picking up road kill raccoons and skinning and drying them in their apartment.

Occasionally, I would find one or two on the way to work ( Northern VA) in the winter time and pick them up if it was safe to stop along the road. I am not sure what some people thought seeing a person in a suit picking up raccoons and placing them in the trunk of the car.
