Reeder Custom Guns - Mag-na-port, et. al.

Talk to me about porting a revolver. I have one that is ported - came that way. What I'm wondering about is the effects on performance; before and after in say a 6" and 7.5" barrel. I've read there's a 20-ish% reduction in felt recoil. Has anyone done before and after testing on velocity/accuracy on the same gun?

with a chronograph has not shown any real difference in velocity. Accuracy may improve due to less felt recoil by the shooter. I don't happen to have any ported handguns.

if you absolutely have to get every FPS. I can tell you a chamber/break is far better at recoil reduction in a sealed breach application. Both are hellishly loud sounding or maybe it's the blast. I think the sound is spread out over a longer duration so it sounds/seems more violent. Ditto for those Mag-na-ports.

I personally think it is a waste on a revolver, but to answer I have never found proof that it slowed any velocity. A chamber/break takes about 2" worth of barrel velocity off for sure. I have video it gas shooting up through the ports so it has to help recoil some in a revolver, but I cannot tell it seat of the pants. You have a bunch of gas leakage at the barrel cylinder gap anyway. One of my main issues with Mag-na-porting a revolver is the mess it makes on the front sight ramp. It lead splatters the ramp something awful and is a booger to clean off. The various lead removal treated rags are the best for the chore, or copper/brass wool. I have a 1980's Mag-na-ported SBH .44 package gun that had a tight spot in the bore right behind the porting. I found it by sheer accident testing the theory of bore constrictions in relation to accuracy. This particular gun had crap accuracy no matter what I did, it was very discouraging. Using special pin gauges I found the constriction about 1.5" from the bore. I have lapped the constriction and accuracy returned (*but before being all the way removed!?). Shoots great now. I'd never say anything bad about their work, I never gave them a chance to address my issue, but it is the truth of my special situation. FWIW.

Was done years ago. I did it because scoped and loaded it weighs under 8pounds. It helps in that case. I’ve had 6 or 7 handguns ported. I noticed the difference in really long barrels but in 6” or less, not so much.

You will lose velocity in a ported barrel. The pressure that would be pushing your bullet out the muzzle is now diverted through the ports pushing your barrel down.

bullet is past the ports, the front of the bullet should be right at the end of the barrel if not already easing out the end of the barrel. I could easily be wrong, but I don't see how you could lose any velocity. Even cutting an inch off a barrel, you only lose about 40 fps so porting shouldn't effect your velocity. Mag Na Port has always said that you don't lose any velocity with their porting.

as accurate as it was before. Just stay away from the wannabe gunsmiths that drill down into the rifling and ruin the accuracy. Mag Na Ports ports are EDM cut (like a laser) so no rough edges to distort the bullet and ruin your accuracy.

Accuracy was excellent but the blast was so "in my face and loud that I will probably not ever have another ported that way. It reduced muzzle flip dramatically but recoil was straight back and did not feel diminished. I am gonna try a muzzle brake on my 44 mag Contender that I'm sending to Gary for rechambering to GNR 429

you can go 445 Super Mag. That works in a Contender
