My Grandfather Goree told me that

growing up in the 1920's they would catch a Possum and throw in the the lard barrel (?). Never got a good mental picture that that was exactly, but I think it was some refuse storage. It was allowed to "clean out" for a week or so then the family would kill and clean, eat the Possum. I've never eaten one that I knew of.

Some old black men, that had whatever version of the Masons the black folks have, did an annual feast fundraiser. It was next door to the Water Utility maintenance shop. As a neighborly gesture us boys would go over that day and give donations and eat with the old men. They were very nice and if you enjoyed BBQ it was a treat. However you didn't really know that "kind" of meat you were actually eating and they were purposefully non specific when asked. Just BBQ, bread, ice tea, and a couple paper towels to wipe your chin. Horse, Coon, Deer, Goat, it's anyone's guess but we ate it several years in a row. I'm still here so I guess it was all good.
