256 Win Mag Trail Gun - First Report...

First off the gun is extremely well fitted. The finish is excellent too. But, guns are to be shot, not just to look at.

I experienced primer flow with my first attempts. I think this is something to watch for in the conversion guns. This time I was to blame. The different shoulder of this cartridge causes pressure to spike quicker than a long, tapered design. The answer was slower powder.

Unique was fine with the 55 grn GT Hollow Point Bullets, but not great with the 85 grn.

2400 was better, but still some issues and groups were around 2" at 25 yards.

So, I decided to try AA1680. Wanting to mimic 25-20 Ballistics, I decided on 25,000 psi as my maximum. Long story short, I ended up using 10.5 grains ignited by a CCI Small Magnum Primer.

I'm guessing velocity in the 14-1500 fps range. That's my goal, so I will chronograph soon and fine tune. Accuracy was 1" or less at 25 yards.

The bullets are from Missouri Bullets and, as I mentioned before, are coated instead of lubed.

Throats on this gun are .259" as are the bullets.

More testing (with pictures) to come as time and weather allow.

My first Trail Gun on a Three Screw Frame couldn't be better.
