Reeder Custom Guns - a new Southern Comfort for Scott Boggs (WB)

This is one of our more unusual Southern Comforts, built on a Single Six. It has a new 5 shot cylinder chambered in 40 S&W. A new 6½" barrel, The old style color cased frame. Our interchangeable blade front sight with a green fiber optic blade. Deluxe Black Chromex on barrel, cylinder and gripframe. We used his original stag grips. It has the full Pos. Performance Package and is very accurate. An unusual and unique Southern Comfort.

I like it! Really cool, had no idea you could a .40 cal on a single six.

I realize an O.M. would be required, but I have a spare base gun. Have also considered the 321 GNR.

A 10mm in a small package would be pretty interesting no doubt! I was thinking maybe Ruger would turn out a 5-shot Sp-101 in a .40 or 10mm someday, would be a cool carry gun. But there's probably not enough meat in the cylinder for them to try it. I think the Gp100 and the Redhawk is just to much overkill for a 10mm, too big and heavy. Especially since most 10mm factory loads are not much more or even as hot as factory .40's.

10mm is almost 20% more than the 40S&W in standard loadings. For instance..
in the 135 grain bullet..
10mm...1400
40 S&W..1200

in the 150 grain bullet
10....1300
40 S&W...1100
And some of the 10mm loads by companies like Corbon and Double Tap are considerably more, as much as 250 fps more. So not even in your wettest dreams will the 40 S&W equal the 10mm. And it is not intended to. It was developed because the 10mm was too hot for law enforcement. The 40 S&W was right in the moderate level that they could handle.

Especially for heavy bullets. The 40 S&W runs out of powder capacity quick when seating heavy bullets.

In my 10mm Trail Gun, I seat the 180s out to a C.O.A.L. of 1.36". This gives a full 1/10" of powder capacity. Factory standard cartridges are 1.26".

The only bullet mine ever gets loaded with is the Berry's Hybrid HP.

Gary's tight custom chambers allow a firm taper crimp. Never a hint of bullets walking out of the case.

Gary I had some 10mm Remington UMC that was running about 100 fps slower than the .40 S&W in the same brand so I don't know what the hell. I never had any of the cheaper 10mm ammo ever come close to 1400fps, I know the Corbon, Underwood and Buffalo Bore will run up there like its supposed but the factory stuff I had wasn't even close, some of it was even listed on the boxes when I compared it the .40. I sold my 10 and I had that ammo left over and sold it to guy at work that wanted it and I showed him the the boxes of the 10 and then I showed him a box of .40 and the .40 was listed as being faster on the side of the box we both laughed. Seemed like American Eagle was the same deal but its been a while I've forgot. Maybe they were some kind of light load but they didn't say it on the boxes.

any caliber. Junk ammo in my humble opinion. One of our distributors told us years ago that it was made in Mexico and way under powered.

I can believe that, had some UMC .44 Magnums that Wal-Mart sold and they were more of a .44 Special and very dirty.

The 40 S&W is a terrific Trail Gun. But, haven't seen a bad one yet. I have nine so far, but definitely more ideas to come.

It's in a couple weeks. I'll call in the morning and get settled up, got a new card. Thanks so much, I needed a little lift this week. Great story on that base gun to begin with. It was a birthday gift from a very dear friend who has since passed on. He taught me a lot before he left. It was a .32 H&R with stock cyl. and bbl. Requiring .312"-.314" bullets to shoot half decent. All my others will shoot .309 fine.

It was hard to resist a .38 Super but the .40 is just what I wanted. I can easily load full power 10mm loads by just seating long in the short cases. Won't fit in a reg. .40 so it's OK.

I really want to load lighter .40 loads of 175 -200 gr. at 700-800 fps for more gentile shooting. I have tons of brass that is so cheap some give it away. 10mm brass is highly sought and expensive in comparison. I have some really hot 10mm around that I don't want in that little gun. That's my thinking.

this little gun will be accompanying you often. The 40 S&W is a modern equivalent of the original 38 WCF and as you said, cases are plentiful. Good power, small package. I wonder what the little Nosler 135's would do in that gun, as Longshot runs them over 1400 fps according to Hodgdon, in a 4" auto.

and call it weak. It worked in the SAA and Carbine from day one. Then they turn around and given a 10-15% boost in velocity, declare it a cannon!

I have worked with the full house 10mm up to 230 gr. bullets at 1200 fps in a special prepped gun. It is serous. But a .40 shooting a cast 200 gr. at 1000 fps is not a pop-gun.

I have many big guns, the SSM-.40 is to be a pleasure gun reserved for sheer enjoyment.
