If you spent your formative gun years in the 70s and 80s

you read the velocity tables in the Gun Digest and the gun magazines extolling the virtues of magnum rounds and the velocities they were able to attain. That's what I zeroed in on, anyway. Chronographs started to become available in the mid 80s and more affordable in the 90s which is when I got my first one. I was very interested in chronographing loads until I flinched a shot from my 500 L through the guts of my chronograph. I still haven't replaced it and am now content to hope that shot placement trumps velocity anyway.
