I just received a list of about 50 new products that

will be announced and premiered at the SHOT show starting today. It is always good to see new useful products come out, but in this case the key word is "useful". I laid the list and pictures of these new items out so my guys could see them and got the expected response...snickers and laughs, and a couple of "you gotta be shitting me" comments.

Willie Nelson (the liberal Obama loving yoyo) said on stage recently.."I just found out I have outlived my dick", well I think I have outlived the shooting industry. I have never seen as many totally useless gimmicks in my life. Have our shooting crowd got to the point where they have to have every gimmick made by man installed on their rifle or handgun? I hate to even say this as that seems to be what every old goat says when something new is introduced. But before I even thought it out loud I let my guys take a look. Most of them are in their early 30s and even without any prompting from me they uttered just about what I was thinking. That was where the comment "you gotta be shitting me" came in.

So on my next Gun Notes I will grit my teeth and let you know about all these wonderful innovations and let you decide if you "gots to have it", and keep my very biased thoughts to myself. Nuff said.

I was just reading up on the new 350 Legend....

A fellow Misfit told me about it this morning. Nothing about the new cartridge interests me.

I suppose AR Lovers will see something I don't. Might make an interesting Mini 14 I suppose.

Hmmm.... rimless 357 Maximum?

Look I always wanted a .357 Max Rifle. I have grown up since then. I have a perfectly good 35 Remington. You cannot load a Max past what you can hand load a 35 to do. JM experience.
I would like an AR platform for a hog gun without going to a AR10. Those are quick shot night time excursions.

yeah I got that too. All it is is a rimless 357 Maximum

that they have shortened to closer to the 357 Maximum (or at least that is what I have been told) and they push it as "the fastest straight wall cartridge in the world". I really hate comments like that. It is like they are not worried about accuracy, just speed.

I wondered about that when I saw it.

Took some looking, 150 gr. at 2350 fps

How fast is a .444 Marlin 240 gr? The factory 180 .351 was right at 2000 in a "blow-back" action over 100 yrs. ago. That is very interesting. You can't monkey too much with a blow-back, you'll blow a case for sure. Hey we can't root against our own but we have been around too long, know too much I guess. We need to be somewhat supportive and look a little impressed, I guess.

yeah well, you can smear whipped cream on cat shit, but it's

still cat shit.

I like Hornady stuff and more power to them

but what they have done is discover the 1907 .351 WSL. I know it is slightly shorter and shoots a 180 gr. .352" bullet at 2000 fps but my goodness you cannot ignore the parallel. I made cases from 5.56mm that I cut the necks out of, worked great. Very neat and useful guns, sort of a more bigger .30 Carbine. The .35 WSL of 1905 was basically a weaker powered semi-auto .357 Carbine, correction .352. The .32 WSL a semi-auto .32-20 for all practical purposes, but with a 170 gr. .321" bullet borrowed from the .32 Special. History, it's still there.

Thumbs up for adapting the concept to the AR platform. I can't wait till they "discover" the "Rimless" .41 Maximum aka .401 WSL of 1910.

All true stuff...

realize that you and 12 other people in the world even know what a WSL cartridge or rifle is. So it is not the same as the people that came up with the 300 Blackout completely ripping J.D.Jones off when he developed it 30 years before them. There is nothing new under the sun. I am sure if you went back a hundred years and looked at some of the odd wildcat cartridges of the day you would find some of my GNR cartridges. I doubt very seriously that anyone at Winchester has ever seen or even know about the old lineup of WSL cartridges. It is a whole new world Charlie Brown. Wake up and smell the petunias.

It is in every industry. Everyone wants to create that one widget that makes them a ba-zillion dollars. I am very involved in horses and recently saw a saddle with a solar panel built into it and 2 USB plugs beneath the horn. That way you can charge your phone. Really? Gary, thanks for keeping it real.....and still using wood.
