pellets don't stack like that, they stagger layers. But the art person right out of college didn't know that.

One thing I have learned is that larger pellets actually hold a better pattern. I shot some water at the pond and a charge of #5's from a .45 Colt special Full length cylinder load held about a 12-16" pattern even to 15+ yds. Too dispersed for small things like rats or snakes but it might get lucky and do a bunny or other bigger smallish critter. The pellets are still going over 1100 fps like a regular shotgun. No difference in a .410 or 8 bore, the individual pellets are all going the same range of fps. My .510 GNR shotshell loads were closer to 1500 fps Held a full 1/2 oz. too!

Thanks for the info WB.

With lead (disks) and stacked them in a 357 case. It was really cool at under 10 feet they would print close together. At longer ranges they turned sideways and flew like frisbees. Crazy dangerous. After that I concluded projectiles should be at least as long as they are wide to stabilize in flight.

A guy at HHC had a Taurus .45/.410

the one with a plastic frame. It was loaded up with $10 worth of that fancy copper "disc" home defense Winchester ammo. He had a ballsy idea and snuck up real close on this old goat. Shot the poor thing 5X and only superficially wounded it, a 65 lb. farm goat. A rifle was borrowed and the poor thing was put out of it's misery.

He also shot an elk 4x with a .300-378 Wby. and almost cried when it didn't fall over at the first shot. Seemingly hit well, it took several tense minutes for it to get sick and fall over. The other guy in his party shot one with a .308, bang flop.

It's how it goes sometimes.
