pellets don't stack like that, they stagger layers. But the art person right out of college didn't know that.
One thing I have learned is that larger pellets actually hold a better pattern. I shot some water at the pond and a charge of #5's from a .45 Colt special Full length cylinder load held about a 12-16" pattern even to 15+ yds. Too dispersed for small things like rats or snakes but it might get lucky and do a bunny or other bigger smallish critter. The pellets are still going over 1100 fps like a regular shotgun. No difference in a .410 or 8 bore, the individual pellets are all going the same range of fps. My .510 GNR shotshell loads were closer to 1500 fps Held a full 1/2 oz. too!
