Found a banged up rusting Savage model 99A in .243 Win. and finished it accept for butt plate. Gave it to my wife to hunt with next year. I used Oxpho-Blue. Not as good as a Hot Blue and took me forever. But it will last quite a while for beating around in the brush.

You'll need to be careful on the butt pad. I use 2-3 wraps of tape to protect. I like getting that toe angle just right to blend in the stock. I catch flack for complaining over prices of stuff but buttpads are no exception. They have gone sky high. Not uncommon to pay $30+ for a raw pad that needs fitting. That's why Gunsmiths charge $100 for the duty! Makes a big mess and you need a mask, or you'll get a surprise next time you toot your nose.
Look online for plain plastic grooved butt pads if you do not need rubber. You might even find one marked "Savage' for a good price. I'd think anything around $10-15 a bargain. I used to buy heavy guns with rotten butt pads and buy them cheap. Fix them for $15 and a little time, clean them up, make a good profit, sometimes nearly 50%. A friend gave me an old vintage Herter's plastic butt I put on an old Winchester. It came out real good. All I used was some tape and a orbital sander (to shape), some #400 grit to hand finish.
Yeah I thought about a new one.

I have fitted them using aluminum tape. In my industry they call it speed tape. A couple of wraps around the stock and it is tough. I saw the original type steel one on E-Bay. Think I'll just clean up the generic one that came with it.
Yeah, I saw lots of them I could clean up and re-sell. I'm way to busy to get into that. I have to many projects now.
Funny, same reason I dumped my 2nd girlfriend

The rotory magazine ones and Lever Actions in general. Last count I had 21 Marlins. I prefer them over Winchesters and Henry's. Savage is my second favorite.
