Reeder Custom Guns - Back in the 1950's

when I was a kid, my dad had a friend who was a missionary in New Guinea. He and his family lived in the jungle and the British government required him to have a firearm. He was not a gun guy and did not want to put a lot of money into a firearm, so he bought a fairly cheap .22 single shot pistol. It met the requirements .. it was a firearm .. and he brought it to our house for Dad to teach him how to use it. We had a shooting range in the basement of the house and Dad ran him through the safety drills and had him shooting fairly well with it by the end of the evening. He and his family went off to New Guinea and lived there for quite a few years .. carried the little .22 everywhere and never had any problems. Used it to pop some big snakes and such.

I know what it is. Any of you Misfits know? Anyone ever mess with one of these?

I've always wanted to play with one. The sights are fixed but after about 2-3 shots you can figure where it hits and compensate. I actually like coarse things like this and the challenge. We shot turtles and snakes back in the 70's out to 100 yds. with a Single Six and Bearcat, we had a FIE and Ruger 4-3/4" Std. Auto too in our arsenal. It totally shocked our parents when they witnessed our handgun work. It seemed impossible to them, we didn't know any better. A rabbit or squirrel up close was in real danger. We lived a blissful pre-teen life.

I could entertain myself for quite a while with one of those. They run $200-250 today. The grips can warp but a clunker would be ripe for customization way beyond it's value. What fun.

I own one. Have had it for years. Shoots a little to the right from memory but very accurate. Also love the old 5mm pump pellet rifles the company made.

Produced in Wisconsin by the Sheridan air rifle company.
Originally priced at $17.95
For another $3.00 you could get a leather holster with it.
Fired .22 Shorts, Longs or Long Rifles.
Had a rotary hammer block safety on the right side.
Barrel was 5" long.
This was the only non airgun made by Sheridan.

Never got to try it. I’d buy one today and be giddy. Ditto for the Savage old single shots. I’d like to play with a Savage 101 too, sort of an el cheapie Hawkeye, but don’t want one to really keep.

I once had a Savage break barrel clone made in Italy. They bring as much as originals!
